Well, who better to learn from than incredibly ambitious people whove accomplished amazing things time and time again? Below are nine awesome tricks to steal from the most driven and motivated people out there so that you can achieve greatness no matter what your aspirations are.It might seem counterintuitive, but learning how to control less and trust more will actually make you more successful in the long run. (Tiny Buddha)A study of a Harvard Business School class showed that people who wrote down their goals earned on average 10 times more than any of their classmates, so its time to grab a pen and paper (or open a Word doc) and get writing. (Forbes)Once you come up with a goal, dont think that you have to stick to that exact dr eam no matter what. Ambitious people know when to refine their goals or even change them completely to better suit them. (Zen Habits)The old saying goes that life is about the journey and not the destination, and how you think about reaching your goals is the same way. By thinking more about how youll schedule your goal into your everyday life, youll have a better chance of success in the long run. (James Clear)Once you come up with a schedule, dont be afraid to dream big. Making your goals too narrow can have adverse affects on your ability to achieve them. (Psychology Today)Ambitious people are great about making their goals public (whether they tell co-workers or blog readers), so dont be afraid of seeking motivation and encouragement from a larger group of people. Tips from negotiation experts for truly happy holidays

Tips from negotiation experts for truly happy holidaysTips from negotiation experts for truly happy holidaysIm having an amazing holiday season. Each year it seems our travel gets more and more out of control. Between the multiple holidays, family we need to visit distributed all around the country and the rounds of parties for work and with friends, its difficult to find time for anything beyond social obligations. This year my husband and I took a different approach, consciously deciding and negotiating what we would do and what we would bedrngnis do. In the end, we stayed home for Thanksgiving and had a lovely dinner with just the four of us (him, me, and our two boys, ages 9 and 11). We are planning one trip to visit his family over Christmas, but will combine it with some dedicated family time. We decided to forego hosting a party of our own and have strictly limited the other parties we will attend. How did this happen? I applied the lessons from my academic study of bargaining a nd negotiation to my personal life. So, with another holiday season upon us, heres some guidance on how to negotiate with your partner while strengthening this critical relationship. From theory to practiceI became interested in negotiation as a graduate student, and part of my dissertation investigated bargaining behavior.I have taught negotiation to students and executives, published many scholarly articles on bargaining and negotiation and given numerous public lectures on the topic. But, like many academics, I hadnt thought to apply my academic expertise to my personal life.Once I started to do so, however, I quickly realized that the concepts and skills learned from negotiation can be used not only to get what you need or want out of your family life but also to make your family life happier overall. The most important insight is that negotiation does not have to be win-lose. It can be win-win.Win-lose versus win-winThe popular conception of negotiation is all about getting the b est deal for yourself or your side. It was a platzdeckchen of Harvard professors in their groundbreaking 1981 book, Getting to Yes, who first popularly introduced the idea that negotiation could be integrative, or result in both parties being better off.In practice, many negotiators see only distributive or win-lose possibilities. In their minds, there is a fixed pie over which the parties are fighting If you win, then I lose. As a result, most of the early academic literature and practical guidance have focused on power. As you might imagine, this can be quite problematic for negotiating within the family. In contrast, the idea of integrative or win-win negotiations involves identifying outcomes that are good for both sides. There are a number of ways one can achieve integrative negotiations, but here I will discuss three of the major ones described in Getting to Yes and subsequent articles.Trade-offs. For example, consider a couple sharing a chicken for dinner. One way to share woul d be to cut the chicken in half and to each get an equal portion. This would be a distributive solution, since we are distributing the chicken between the couple, and if one were to get more (win), the other would get less (lose). An integrative agreement can be found by identifying trade-offs between the two parties. For example, it turns out that I like the dark meat and my husband likes the white meat. So I can give him my breast and wing and he can give me his leg and thigh, and we can both win.Adding issues. A second way to achieve win-win solutions is to change the scope of the negotiation. For example, each year my husband and I negotiate about where to take our summer vacation. I want to go to the forests of Lake Tahoe and he wants to go to the casinos of Atlantic City. As long as the scope of the negotiation remains focused on this one trip, it will be difficult to satisfy us both. However, imagine we expanded the negotiation to include multiple dimensions. For example, we could make a multi-year deal where we alternated our destinations. Or I could commit to spending our winter vacation in Atlantic City in exchange for a summer vacation in Lake Tahoe. Or he could agree to let me pick the vacation destination if I allow him to host a monthly poker game at our house.Las Vegas or Lake Tahoe?Public DomainBeyond positions to interests. A third way to achieve win-win solutions is to move beyond each individuals position and focus on his or her interests. For example, when my husband and I were getting married, we had our strongest disagreement about the wedding cake. I wanted chocolate and he wanted white (vanilla). After many rounds of arguing, I finally asked why he wanted white cake. He replied that white was traditional and he wanted the cake to be white in the pictures. I told him that my whole family liked chocolate, and we wanted to eat chocolate cake. Once you move beyond positions (white cake versus chocolate cake) to underlying interests (picture cake versus eating cake), many integrative solutions become possible white chocolate, brides cake/grooms cake, Photoshop and so on.In the end, we had a three-getier cake, with two large chocolate tiers and one small white tier which we fed each other for the photos.Negotiation tactics for the familySo, how should you negotiate with your partner, parents or children to get what everyone wants during the holidays? Here are some suggested tactics to help you achieve these win-win outcomes.Be honest, not mean. To achieve win-win negotiations, all parties involved must be honest about what they want. One study found that married couples come to fewer win-win solutions than friends in part because they are unwilling to ask for what they want, thinking that the other person will be angry with them.Simply giving in to the other persons demands is not the pathway to win-win solutions. Instead, each party needs to express what is important to him or her and why, and listen carefully to his or her partners priorities and reasoning.Explaining that I wanted to eat chocolate cake and understanding that my husband wanted white cake for the pictures was pivotal to our coming to a win-win agreement.Make concessions. One of the hallmarks of negotiations is that no one gets everything he or she wants. You need to be willing to make concessions, to give up the aspects that are less important to you in order to get what is most important to you. While cleaning up after poker games at our house is not my idea of a great time, its worth it to get the summer vacation I want.Be creative. Once you understand and accept each others needs, you need to be creative about finding ways to meet them. This can involve brainstorming and being tolerant of your partners crazy, off-the-wall ideas in the process.Should we go to Monaco? What about an zugreifbar poker account? How about a long weekend in Reno during our Tahoe trip?Make promises, not threats. Finally, a word about language. One of the r ealities of negotiation is that either party can walk away. One way to keep the conversation constructive is to make promises (if we both order the chicken, Ill trade your white meat for my dark meat) and avoid threats (if you wont trade, Ill have to order the surf-and-turf).The past and the futureEach family has a long history together, with real and perceived slights. Families also expect to have long futures together. As a result, it is extremely important that these negotiations be handled with respect for the other party, and with a view to the long-term costs and benefits. Pick your battles, and concede on the other issues. You dont need to win them all, just the important ones. For this holiday season, we negotiated for a slower-paced experience with more quality time with our nuclear family. As the winter holidays approach, remember to consider your interests, listen to the goals of your partner and search for win-win solutions. May your holidays be joyous and your negotiation s be integrative.Rachel Croson, Dean, College of Social Science MSU Foundation Professor of Economics, Michigan State UniversityEditors note This is an updated version of an article originally published Dec. 19, 2017.This article is republished from The Conversation under a Creative Commons license. Behind Every Success Theres Less Glamorous Work - The Muse

Behind Every Success Theres Less Glamorous Work - The Muse Behind Every Success Theres Less Glamorous Work Eve L. Ewing’s first book, Electric Arches, was named to best book lists by the Chicago Tribune and NPR. It won the 2018 Norma Farber First Book Award from the Poetry Society of America, the 2018 Alex Award from the American Library Association, and the 2017 Chicago Review of Books Award for Poetry. Chicago Magazine called the collection of poetry, essays, and art “one of the most powerful, unique portrayals of Chicago to ever grace the page.” Ewing, who is very active (and interactive) on Twitter, told her more than 138,000 followers that her sales goal for the book’s first year was exceeded in just three months- a fact that so confused her she thought the publisher had sent over incorrect numbers. “Thousands of you have made a place in your life for a weird little book of poetry from a first-time author. I'm awed, humbled, and deeply grateful. Thank you,” she wrote. But behind the sales reports and accolades, the author reminded everyone, there’s not only artistic and literary talent, but also a lot of less glamorous work. She shared a list of “skills that’ve contributed to the success of my book that have nothing to do with my writing ability:” - taking constructive criticism- asking for help- meeting deadlines - using social media - event planning - answering email- using a calendar- being friendly You don’t have to be an award-winning writer, a sociologist who earned her PhD at Harvard University, and a professor at the University of Chicago- as Ewing is- to relate to and learn from her post. Think about the specific items she included. How might improving your own skills in these areas influence how you do your job (whether it’s writing or something totally different)? Give yourself some credit if you already excel at one or more of them- even if you’ve yet to achieve whatever professional milestones you’ve set your sights on. Make your own list of all the skills that are crucial to attaining your ultimate goals. It could help you expand your definition of success and create a more nuanced and forgiving way to measure your progress. Not only that, these crucial underlying skills could bolster your case next time you’re gunning for a project, a promotion, or a new job. And finally, apply the same idea to others. If you’re a manager, think about the full array of skills your hires and direct reports need to truly be great at what they do, and make sure you talk about their performance in those terms and value all aspects of their success. And if you’re looking to emulate role models, make sure you pay attention to all the glamorous and not-so-glamorous work that goes into their triumphs. Let Ewing’s tweet help you think about success in a more holistic way. Because there’s almost always more to it than the just the shiny parts.

How to Get More Results With a C.A.R. Resume

How to Get More Results With a C.A.R. Resume How to Get More Results With a C.A.R. Resume How to Get More Results With a C.A.R. Resume Beep beep! Winning resume coming through. Your resume is more than just a list of previous jobs and education. It's the story of you and your professional life. Scratch that. It's the story of you and your professional development. Employers want to look at your resume and see that story loud and clear. Where have you been? What have you done? Most importantly, what have you accomplished? They don't only want to know what you think you have learned; they want to know how you benefited your previous employers. One of the most efficient ways to do this is by applying the C.A.R. method when building your resume. C.A.R. is the acronym for Challenge, Action, and Results. Read on to discover how to apply the C.A.R. method to your resume and get better results in your job search. C: Challenge Every position faces challenges. This doesn't mean dealing with a challenging co-worker, it's about the company and your role within it. What issues were you or the company facing that you were able to fix? It doesn't matter if you work in construction, payroll, or sales all companies have their own sets of issues that they look to their employees to help solve. For each job that you have listed on your resume, think about the tasks you were given. Each task is, in other words, a problem something that hasn't been done that needs to be done. By doing the task, you'll be solving some issue for the company. When brainstorming for ideas, it's not the day-to-day issues you're looking for, but the problems that required time, strategy, and skill to solve. Bring out those challenges on your resume. Here are some examples. Instead of: Researched marketing strategies. Try: Improved our company's return on investment with our marketing campaigns. Instead of: Worked with frontend checkout process. Try: Helped improve our sales-per-hour numbers at checkout. Instead of: New market analysis. Try: Found new markets for our products in the Midwest. Of course the bigger the problem, the more impressive the resume. But when you're putting together your resume, don't worry about that. You don't want to make things sound bigger than they were. Just think about the real issues that were facing your company and your position and get them on your resume. A: Action Now you've established that you were in charge of handling a problem. What did you do about it? What strategy did you put in place to tackle the problem and why? Did you implement new policies? Did you cut wasteful spending? The key to Action is keeping it short and sweet. You only have so much room on your resume, and of the three items in the C.A.R. formula, the action should get the least amount of attention. Be concise and simply state what you did to improve the situation. Here are some examples. Shifted marketing dollars away from print and billboards to create a radio campaign integrated with social media. Added a new coding system at checkout for looking up produce. Researched applications for our products in schools and hospitals in the Midwest. While this part of the equation may get the fewest words on your resume, you will need to be ready to explain it in further detail. If you get the interview, the hiring company will very likely want to know why you chose that specific strategy. Related:How to Make Your Resume Stand Out With Action Verbs R: Results This is what prospective employers really want to see. Sure, you were faced with a problem and came up with a plan to address it, but how did you do? They don't want to hear that it went well. They want to see quantifiable results. Here are some examples. Improved ROI on marketing by 35% in the first year. Increased sales-per-hour from 23 to 38 due to faster produce lookup times. Grew sales to the Midwest by 78% by developing a new market with public school systems. Top tip: Really frontload the important information on these statements. Don't hide the payoff at the end. Recruiters only scan resumes for an average of six seconds before making a judgment, so what they do see needs to be the most impactful material you have. The statements like these in a C.A.R. resume show that you don't just show up to work each day you get things done that help the company. When faced with a challenge, you're not afraid to dig in and create a solution. But what if your solution didn't get great results or maybe didn't work at all? That's tough to put out there on your resume, but if it's relevant work experience, you should do so anyway. If possible, try to spin the results phrase into a positive (i.e. what you learned from it). For example: ROI on radio campaign was negligible because the social media campaign did not properly support it. New procedures were developed to streamline and sync campaigns. It's okay to admit that a project didn't go as planned. Do you think employers really believe that every applicant has a flawless work history? Seeing an admission of error and a secondary solution shows integrity. A prospective employer who isn't able to recognize that is likely going to be a challenge to work for anyway. The C.A.R. resume When done properly, a C.A.R. resume is easy and quick to scan, but still paints a great picture of the candidate and what they truly bring to the table. Every job exists to help make the company better in one way or another. From keeping floors and bathrooms clean to improving networking solutions between cities, each person in the workforce is tasked with making their company better. A C.A.R. method resume shines a spotlight on the contributions you've made to each of the companies you've worked for. Ideally, each progressive job should show bigger and more productive solutions. Want even more incentive to boost your resume with the C.A.R. technique? Think about the interviews you've had in the past. There are usually some awkward moments when you're not sure how to talk about what you actually did at a certain job. While building your C.A.R. resume, you'll be forced to really examine your career stops and what you accomplished while you were there. When it comes time to sit down face-to-face for that interview, you'll be ready for just about any question they can throw at you. You'll know your strengths, weaknesses, and most likely which projects meant the most to you and why. Every job has a challenge. A good employee will take action to fight that problem. A great employee can talk about the amazing results they achieved with their actions. You've been that great employee, so make sure your resume tells that story. Relationship Between Health Issues and Law Enforcement

Relationship Between Health Issues and Law Enforcement Relationship Between Health Issues and Law Enforcement If youre looking for a job in criminology or criminal justice, consider yourself forewarned: law enforcement careers may be hazardous to your health. It has long been believed that police work is correlated with a host of diseases, illnesses, and ailments. Research Links Police Work to Poor Health Hard research by Doctor John Violanti, professor of social and preventative medicine at the  University of Buffalo School of Public Health and Health Professionals has confirmed this. The fact is, police officers are far more likely to suffer numerous health complications than members of the general workforce. There are two primary factors that have been identified as being associated with most of the health issues officers face: shift work and stress. Shift work is considered to be any hours worked outside of standard daylight hours, typically between 7:00 AM and 6:00 PM. Stress, of course, is understood to be a persons response to external stimuli, situations, and incidents, known as stressors. No Rest for the Weary The bad news is, if there are two things law enforcement careers have plenty of, they are shift work and stress. This adds up to the potential for plenty of health problems down the road for police officers. According to the United States Department of Labors Bureau of Labor Statistics, there are approximately 15 million Americans, or 9 percent of the total workforce, who work non-standard or irregular hours. By contrast, a majority of the police force is assigned to shift work, either rotating into and out of night shifts or working them permanently. Health Issues So whats the problem with shift work? In a word, sleep. Everyone needs it, but not everyone gets it.  Police officers are among those who get it the least. According to Doctor Claire Caruso and Doctor Roger Rosa, researchers at the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health, people need sleep similarly to the way in which they need food and water. Sleep Is a Necessity, Not an Option Sleep, as anyone who has ever been tired can attest, is a biological necessity. Healthy sleep is vital to maintaining life, overall health and workplace safety. When we are tired or fatigued, our ability to make decisions is diminished and our immune system is inhibited. We are also at a greater risk for mental and psychological ailments. Sleep Patterns Shift work affects sleep patterns for a variety of reasons. First of all, according to Dr. Caruso and Dr. Rosa, humans are hardwired to sleep when its dark outside. Unfortunately, working during non standard hours necessarily requires sleeping during non standard hours. The problem is that working nights and sleeping days goes against our biology. Its unnatural for us to be up and working during the night, which contributes to a feeling of tiredness or even fatigue through a shift. Likewise, its unnatural for us to sleep during daylight hours, making it harder to fall and stay asleep in the daytime. In addition to the biological issue that affects sleeping during the day, there are practical and logistical issues, as well. Officers who have families or who live with people working regular hours will often find their sleep interrupted by other people in the home, who are understandably awake when the officers are not. Even if they live alone, the ambient noise of normal daytime activities can impede daytime sleeping. Health Problems from Poor Sleep According to Dr. Rosa and Dr. Caruso, lack of sleep and poor sleeping habits contribute to a variety of health problems such as: Decreased mental facultiesDecreased immune systemDepressionWork-related injuriesStrained relationshipsHeart diseaseCancerMood disorders Family Life Aside from sleep issues, though, shift work can place a tremendous strain on personal relationships and family life. Whether on permanent or rotating shifts, some officers may go weeks or even months at a time without spending quality time with their friends and families due to their work schedule and sleep patterns.?? BCOPS Researchers from the University of Buffalo worked closely with the Buffalo Police Department to produce the Buffalo Cardio-Metabolic Occupational Police Stress (BCOPS) study, published in the International Journal of Emergency Mental Health.  BCOPS suggests a strong link between police stress and poor health. High Demands, High Stress The study was predicated on the belief that high demands are placed upon law enforcement, which would, in turn, lead to chronic health problems. It is widely understood that police officers face tremendous physical and psychological stress on a daily basis. Generally speaking, the encounters police officers have with the public are unpleasant ones; rarely are officers called to give someone good news. Officers are required to deal with numerous stress-inducing situations, including scenes of death and dismemberment, argumentative traffic violators, aggressive subjects, and miserable, upset, angry or depressed individuals. Add to this the pressure, uncertainty and yes, even fear, of wondering whether the next person they interact with is going to be the one that tries to take their life or who will force them to take the life of another. It is easy to imagine, then, how stressful the job can easily become.? Stress, Law Enforcement Careers,? and Health The BCOPS study draws a correlation between the daily stress of police work and obesity, suicide, sleeplessness, and cancer. It also confirmed the relationship between sleeplessness, shift work, and overall health, suggesting an increase in metabolic syndrome, which includes abdominal obesity, high blood pressure, type 2 diabetes and resistance to insulin and possible stroke. Dr. Violantis research produced some interesting findings: 40 percent of officers were obese as compared to 32 percent of the general population.25 percent of officers demonstrated signs of metabolic syndrome compared to 18.7 percent of the general population.Officers faced an increased risk of Hodgkins lymphoma and brain cancer after 30 years of service.Suicide rates were eight times higher among active duty law enforcement officers as opposed to those who had retired or resigned from the police force. It's a Dirty Job, But Somebody's Gotta Do It Health hazards aside, society needs police officers. Someone has to do the job, and many of the stresses that come with it are unavoidable. Its well known that law enforcement careers are dangerous anyway, without poor health being taken into account. Working Toward a Healthy Career What, then, can officers do to mitigate stress and its associated problems and increase their chances at a happy and healthy life? Here are a few tips from the National Institute of Occupational Safety and Health: When working shift work, allow yourself enough time to get adequate sleep between shifts.Stay away from heavy foods and alcoholic beverages before going to sleep.Reduce your caffeine intake and stay away from caffeine and other stimulants for several hours before you try to sleep.Choose a quiet, dark, cool and comfortable place to sleep, especially if sleeping during nonstandard hours.Eat a healthy, balanced diet.Establish and maintain an exercise routine to reduce stress, improve personal health and help you sleep. If you find that youre having difficulty dealing with the stresses of the job or getting enough sleep, seek professional medical help as soon as possible. Why Work in Law Enforcement? With all of the stresses and potential health issues that come with the job, why would anyone choose to work in a law enforcement career? The fact is that with a positive, healthy outlook and good sleep and exercise habits, law enforcement careers can prove to be fun and rewarding. Police officer careers can offer plenty of benefits, both tangible and intangible, and are among the highest paying jobs in criminology and criminal justice. Of course, idealism and altruism also play a role. If you think you have what it takes, working as a police officer may just be the perfect criminology career for you.

Challenges Managers Face and How to Deal With Them

Challenges Managers Face and How to Deal With Them Challenges Managers Face and How to Deal With Them Management has its share of perks and rewards. Managers are usually in a better position to influence and lead change. In most organizations, being a manager means a better compensation package and not having to sit in a cubicle. Most importantly, there’s nothing like the satisfaction of helping an individual or team reach their goals and perform at their best. However, there’s a price to pay for the status and those extra rewards and perks. Being a manager means you also have to deal with tough issues that can cause you to lose sleep.  Here  are the top ten problems that keep a manager up at night, along with a “sleep aid” for each one.? Confronting an Employee Performance Problem Dealing with performance problems has been and always will be the primary source of a managers sleepless nights. While these issues are never easy, they don’t have to be so hard. Many performance problems can be prevented with better selection practices and then by setting clear performance expectations. If you identify a problem, the sooner you engage in constructive feedback, the faster you can facilitate a change in behavior. If the behavior does not improve, a transparent, fair and time-boxed progressive discipline process is called for. Postponing discussions or avoiding the discipline process prolong the problem and add to your sleepless nights. Confront performance problems as soon as they appear in the workplace, and you will rest easier.   Terminating an Employee There is no sleep aid for this one. No matter what you’ve done (see number one), it’s always going to be gut-wrenching. No manager should ever get too comfortable with this responsibility. Make sure you have clear policies and training for severe conduct violations. For layoffs, make sure you use a fair and consistent process, get training on how to conduct the discussion respectfully, and provide a decent severance and outplacement package.   Making the Right Hiring Decision Choosing between your final candidates can be agonizing. If you choose wrong, you’re going to end up dealing with a few of the other problems on this list. The cure? Use a suitable selection process - do not “wing it”. Get trained in selection interviewing; consider using validated selection assessments; get multiple inputs, offer realistic job previews or shadowing, and work with a good HR pro or recruiter. Doing Something Unethical or Wrong Here’s a preventative measure: When making a decision, ask yourself, “How comfortable would I be reading about my decision in the newspaper the next day”? That’s a far better question than “What are the chances of being caught?” If you do screw up (and we all do), then the best thing is to come clean and own up to it. Cover-ups are usually worse than the mistake. Live with the consequences, learn from your mistake, and get on with it. If one of your employees cross over the line of ethical behavior and do something unethical, confront the issue immediately and get help from your HR pro or compliance team.   Confronting Your Boss Covering the topic of how to deal with a bad boss would take up more time than reading this would allow. Let’s assume most bosses are reasonably competent with good intentions. Bosses and people, in general, don’t like being told they are wrong. If that’s your goal in a confrontation (to convince your boss you’re right and they are wrong), then it’s not going to be a productive discussion. Try putting yourself in your boss’s shoes, and offer your idea as an alternative that  will help them achieve their objectives. Also, listen and keep an open mind. Who knows - your boss may have information that would lead you to reconsider your idea. Most importantly, work on establishing a foundation of trust and mutual respect with your boss. That way, you’ll be able to have disagreements in a safe and productive environment. Team Conflicts As managers, we all want our employees to collaborate, work as a team, and play nice in the sandbox. When one employee comes to you with complaints about another employee, it puts the manager in an awkward position of having to arbitrate the dispute. It is important to distinguish between task or personal conflict when alerted to a situation among team members. Task conflict is proven to be healthy and leads to the consideration and development of alternative ideas. Personal conflict, however, is toxic to teams and must be eliminated immediately.   Many project managers and team leaders work hard to clarify team values early in the formation process. The values outline acceptable and aspirational behaviors, and team member support of the values is a requirement. If the conflicts are personal, conduct a fair, frank discussion with the involved parties and indicate that behavior adjustment is expected immediately. If the conflict continues, eliminate the individuals from the team.   A significant amount of team member conflicts  can be avoided with a team member recruiting profile that clearly describes the need for teamwork and collaboration. Expected behaviors should be identified in detail, and the rewards and consequences that reinforce these expectations must be communicated. As a final caution, beware the “star” performer that’s consistently ticking off their co-workers. If you do, then you are inviting conflict to the team party. The identification and reinforcement of team values is your best preventive medicine for team conflict. If it emerges, deal with it quickly, firmly and fairly.   Peer Conflicts Are you starting to see a trend here? Yes, confrontations -  those messy people issues - are probably the single aspect of work that keeps managers up at night the most. That’s why many managers tend to avoid them. In some cases, that’s not a bad strategy (i.e., develop more tolerance, acceptance, etc…). However, when the stakes are high, avoidance is a terrible strategy. Not all confrontations are bad - a little constructive conflict is healthy for a team.   Having to Learn Something New   It’s always a challenge when we have to leave our comfort zone and feel “incompetent” all over again. If you never do anything new and different, you’re not developing. The most impactful way to develop as a leader is new jobs and challenging assignments. “Learning agility” is not something anyone is born with - it can be developed over time. When you are in a new role or doing something new, put a development plan in place to ensure your success. There are usually two to three “subject matter experts” that you can learn from, as well as books, courses, and online resources. Nowadays, with social networking, you can easily find someone that’s willing to help by sharing their expertise in whatever you need to learn. Great leaders are always learning and are not afraid to admit it. Losing a High Potential Employee Don’t wait until your star employee shows up with an offer letter. By then, it’s too late. Make sure your high potential employees are paid what they are worth, are challenged, supported, and are learning. Let them know you care and how much you appreciate them. Keep in mind that star performers will eventually get promoted or leave for better opportunities. That’s okay, that’s the rewarding part of being a great leader (as long as they are moving  on for the right reasons, not because they’re dissatisfied). Burnout Take care of your health and always keep a perspective on the things in life that matter most. Managers that don’t take vacations are not benefiting from the opportunity to recharge their batteries. They also set terrible examples for their employees, which can lead to burning them out as well. A primary cause of burnout is job satisfaction, not hard work. If you’re doing something you genuinely hate, then make a plan to transition to something else. Life is too short. We don’t need to settle for a job we hate.

10 Working Parents Reveal How They Juggle It All

10 Working Parents Reveal How They Juggle It All 10 Working Parents Reveal How They Juggle It All Many parents describe having children as a job unto itself. It can seem impossible to take on this new, challenging, high stakes (not to mention lifelong!) job when you have a regular day job to take care of as well. September 16 th is National Working Parents Day, which honors these individuals who are able to do the impossible: have a day job and raise a child at the same time. How do they do it? Glassdoor reached out to parents across different professions about their best tips and secrets for making the most of the time spent with children while still staying on top of their professional lives. From school administrators to attorneys, these parents have all found ways to balance and prioritize the endless responsibilities that come with living a full life. For Scott, who works as an attorney, the easiest way to maximize the time spent with kids is to simply turn off the phone until the kids are safely tucked away in bed. “ I think it really helps to create some boundaries around work/home and an easy way for me to do that is put my phone away when I get home,” he says. Instead of being distracted by emails or texts, time can be spent focusing on the children. Nailing down in advance which partner will do what, and when, to take care of the child is crucial to Elisha, who works as a school administrator. “Deciding who will handle each of the many duties that come with being a working parent helps eliminate unnecessary frustration and provides clarity,” advises Elisha. One example of this Elisha gives is dividing nighttime responsibilities in advance between the couple â€" one gives the child a bath, while the other puts the child to bed. A big part of sharing responsibilities is sharing your time. Another tip Elisha gives is sharing calendars with your partner, so each partner can be kept in the loop. That way, Elisha says, “we know if the other parent is going to have an occasional late night at the office, and it doesn’t catch us off-guard.” Since Eduardo, special projects deputy for the mayor of Los Angeles, and his wife don’t have a readily available cadre of retired relatives to watch their daughter on short notice, he recommends making a list of babysitters who can be called at a moment’s notice in case anything comes up. This way, there’s always someone on call â€"  the longer the list, the better. Creating a joint calendar allows Eduardo and his wife â€" who also works full time â€" to map out the majority of their household and work functions. And the calendar is a constant work in progress: “on a bi-weekly basis, we meet to negotiate our work-related functions on our family calendar,” Eduardo says. For Eric, who works in strategy and planning, familial harmony is a dynamic effort. This quest for harmony depends on what sacrifices and ambitions are necessary for the family to achieve balance, he says. “ A good friend once shared with me the allegory of the plate-spinning acrobat as the relevant comparison for work-life balance,” recounts Eric. “The acrobat does not focus on all of the plates all of the time, as that would be impossible.   Instead, the acrobat focuses on the plate that needs his attention the most.” “Ruthlessly prioritize,” says Tracy, a senior director of digital marketing. This can be done in advance, by making it clear to your coworkers and your manager that you have a schedule you stick to. That way, last-minute requests to stay late or take on an extra project can be prevented before they happen. Tracy observes that the ability to say “no” is one of most effective gateways to being able to spend more time with your kids. “ Don’t feel guilty about saying no to happy hours on weeknights and birthday parties on the weekends,” she says. Saying “no” is essentially a tool that can be used to maintain boundaries. “Recognize that ‘work-life balance’ largely is a misnomer,” says Meena, founder of the Phenomenal Women Action Campaign . Sacrifices must always be made, either on the “work” side or the “life” side, and this is something that should be accepted early on, points out Meena. That way, these choices can be planned around. For Terrance, a university administrator, family is the number one priority. So when a choice about where to put time or energy comes up, Terrance says he always goes back to a simple question: “Are you investing in your priorities?” 11. Plan your job around your life (rather than the other way around) “I’ve learned that my children don’t really care as much about having fancy clothes or toys as they care about spending quality time with me,” says Dr. Candice Weaver, for whom quality time with family is a top priority. Dr. Weaver, who works as a Family Medicine physician, shares that quality time with family is what we should plan our schedules around, rather than planning our lives around our job. Sometimes laundry, housekeeping, and errands can chip away at the free hours of the day. Dr. Weaver says that she outsources these types of tasks whenever she can afford it. This all serves to create more frequent, and more quality, time with the family. Just like Eduardo and his wife map out their home and work schedules on a regular basis, Dr. Weaver also sets aside a dedicated time on the weekend to prep meals and plan the week’s busy schedule. That way, the slings and arrows of the week’s responsibilities can be better handled and prepared for. Pick a time that of day â€" or week â€" that you absolutely must spend with your kids, and stick with it, says Katie, a former lawyer. That might be driving them to school in the morning, dinner around the table every night, or even a weekly ice cream date. That way, you can plan your schedule around this “sacred time,” and prioritize it above all other responsibilities.   Having 11-year-old and 5-year-old daughters, says Walter, an energy consultant, means that there is always some kind of soccer match or school concert. If work gets in the way, Walter says, it’s important to make it up to the children and explain why you weren’t there.
